DROPPED METATARSAL HEAD

What is it?
A dropped metatarsal head is a condition where in one of the metatarsal bones (usually the second metatarsal) is lower than the rest at the distal end.

What are the common symptoms?
Patients complain of pain and a sensation that they are walking on a stone, and they generally have a callus, under the area of the dropped metatarsal.

How is it caused?
The condition is very common and the cause is considered to be almost strictly hereditary. Over pronation does play a role because abnormal weight distributions in an abnormally pronated foot does tend to throw too much weight to the 2nd metatarsal.

Dropped Metatasal Heads

How is it treated.
The patient should be fitted with orthotics to correct any abnormal pronation. The orthotics should have a metatarsal pad under the dropped metatarsal which will raise it and alleviate the pain or an excavation under the 2nd dropped Metatarsal head will alleviate the pain as well.
